Born in Glamorgan County, Wales in 1908, shortly after his twin sister Belewyn, Samuil was raised by Welsh nationalist parents in a Welsh nationalist household. His father died around the time he and Bell turned 15. Sam and Bell had almost a preternatural connection while they were growing up, and are remarkable in that while Sam’s left eye is blue and his right is brown, Bell’s left eye is brown and her right is blue.

Bell refused to marry and give up the family farm, but Sam found a nice girl and settled down, finding work as a blacksmith, dabbling with folk art on the side. Sam always had a way with words, and eventually he became the town’s well-read but quiet blacksmith. This all changed with Bell’s sudden and nocturnal departure for Cardiff. Although he rented the farm out to a tenant farmer and brought his mother to live with him in his sister’s absence, Sam began to experience strange dreams, dreams of thirst, desperation, and an unmistakeable tang of danger. Sam persisted in believing that these sensations were merely dreams, until, lying awake one night three years to the day from the night Bell left, he was shaken by a strong vision with the distinctive feeling of the connection he shared in childhood with his twin sister. He left for Cardiff the next morning, never to return.

Using the connection between Bell and himself, Sam located her in the slums of Cardiff, finding her in the midst of feeding. Another nonhuman witness to this spectacle dragged the young neonate and her mortal brother to the Invictus Prince of Cardiff, Emrys Ramsay. Emrys gave Sam a choice—now that he knew of the existence of the Kindred, he could either undergo the Embrace and become one of them, or he could die. Sam chose the former, and was made the Childe of Emrys Ramsay that very night.

Eventually, Bell grew tired of the endless political machinations of the Cardiff Invictus. She convinced Sam to move to Dublin, where they became affiliated with the Circle of the Crone, which incorporated the traditional Celtic mythology with Crone iconography. It was this brand of Crone worship which brought Sam and Bell to Milwaukee and its powerful Circle Matriarch when Bell once again began to get restless, in 1963. In Milwaukee they found a relatively established, if splintered, Kindred scene. Tensions will begin to build up as more Kindred find their way to the city, but up till 2010 there have been no direct conflicts between covenants.
